In a flowing stream, a riffle-pool sequence (also known as a pool-riffle sequence) develops as a stream's hydrological flow structure alternates from areas of relatively shallow to deeper water. This sequence is present only in streams carrying gravel or coarser sediments.
Biological Monitoring Protocol provides step-by-step instructions for collecting standardized samples of stream insects and other invertebrates to provide robust measures of stream condition. Analysis of data collected with these methods yields an index of biological integrity, a multimetric biological index that reflects the condition or health of the stream just as the index of leading economic indicators or the consumer price index are used to measure the health of an economy.
